EO.Lab is an Academic Unit of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, focused on Earth Observation and Geospatial Education, Research, Applications and Services.

It is steered by experienced academic personnel with an international profile and organized around a next generation of promising young scientists, engineers, researchers and educators.

History

EO.Lab was originally founded in 2003, under the name “Remote Sensing and GIS Applications Laboratory” of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. Since then, it resides within the Department of Physical and Environmental Geography, School of Geology, Faculty of Sciences. The initiative for the foundation of the Lab was undertaken by Prof. Th. Astaras, who was also its first director, until his retirement in 2011. The official reorientation and renaming of the Lab, in order to reflect its capacities and the  evolution in its field, has been initiated in 2020 and is currently underway.

Mandate
EO.Lab’s mandate includes (a) extensive education and training activities in the broad domain of Geography at undergraduate and post-graduate level, (b) PhD and project-based research as well as (c) the provision of services to public and private entities.

As part of a public institution, EO.Lab also strongly supports open access principles and initiatives to any kind of educational and research resources, aiming at improving human lives, safeguarding the environment and ensuring a sustainable future for the next generations.

Facilities & Equipment

EO.Lab facilities are located at the Department of Physical and Environmental Geography. The Lab owns or has guaranteed access to all necessary equipment, software, hardware and processing capabilities, in order to fulfill its mandate. These include e.g. image processing and GIS software, access to virtual machines and cloud processing infrastructure, various types of GNSS devices (from simple, hand-held, to geodetic ones), LiDAR, UAVs, Sonars, boats, spectrometers  etc.
